200 Iranian Inmates Freed from Foreign Prisons in 4 Months
TEHRAN (FNA)- Over two hundred Iranian inmates have been released from prison in different world countries during the last four months of the current Iranian year (started on March 21), a foreign ministry official announced on Wednesday.
"Owing to the efforts made by the (foreign ministry's) department of Iranian expatriates and the Islamic Republic's missions and embassies in foreign countries, 204 Iranian prisoners jailed in Georgia, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Azerbaijan, Qatar, Yemen, Kenya, Sri Lanka, China, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Turkmenistan, Uganda and Russia have been freed in the first four months of the current (Iranian) year and returned to the country," Head of the Iranian foreign ministry department for Iranian expatriates' affairs Hamid Reza Shakerisar told FNA.
Shakerisar had earlier told FNA that 778 Iranian inmates, mostly imprisoned in the Persian Gulf littoral states and Eastern Asia, were freed from foreign countries' prisons in the last Iranian year (ended on March 20).
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi had announced in January that Iraqi officials had agreed to release a large number of Iranian inmates imprisoned in their country.
"The Iraqi officials have taken effective measures in this regard and we will soon witness freedom of a considerable number of Iranian prisoners in Iraq," he said at the time.
