Samsung SDI Q2 net rises 26 pct
SEOUL, July 28 (Yonhap) -- Samsung SDI Co., a South Korean manufacturer of rechargeable batteries, said Thursday that its second-quarter earnings rose 26 percent from one year earlier thanks to rising demand from smartphones and tablet PCs.
Net profit reached 86.5 billion won (US$81.9 million) in the April-June period, compared with 68.4 billion won a year earlier, it said in a regulatory filing.
Sales edged up 1.7 percent on-year to 1.35 trillion won and operating profit rose 6.7 percent to 89.2 billion won, it said.
The company said that it ramped up production of rechargeable batteries for smartphones and tablet PCs to meet rising demand, which bolstered its revenues.
Samsung SDI said last month that it will acquire a solar cell business from its larger affiliate Samsung Electronics Co. for 161 billion won ($148 million) in a bid to transform itself into an energy company.
