Daegu to assign food inspectors for athletics championships

DAEGU, July 28 (Yonhap) -- Local food safety authorities said Thursday food inspectors will be placed across the city during the World Championships in Athletics to ensure culinary hygiene for visitors.
The Daegu wing of the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said it will assign 132 inspectors throughout the athletes' village, hotels, competition and practice facilities plus food and beverage distributors during the championships.
The event is set for Aug. 27-Sept. 4, and is expected to host about 2,500 athletes from at least 207 countries.
The Daegu office also plans to operate a situation room to monitor food safety in the city and to cooperate with related agencies. The room will stay open from Aug. 1 to Sept. 7 with no day off, an official said.
"Since the championships are held in summer when there's a greater likelihood of food poisoning, we'd like to ask people to ensure safety for their food and beverages," the official said.
