Samsung Heavy Q2 net rises 10 pct
SEOUL, July 28 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Heavy Industries Co., a South Korean shipbuilder, said Thursday that its second-quarter earnings rose 10 percent from a year earlier mainly thanks to increased demand for high-priced ships.
Net profit reached 260 billion won (US$247 million) in the April-June period, compared with a profit of 236 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing.
Sales climbed 5.4 percent to 3.15 trillion won over the cited period, while operating income dropped 7.2 percent to 325 billion won.
In the first six months of the year, Samsung Heavy has won deals valued at some $14 billion, far exceeding this year's annual order target of $11.5 billion. Last year, the company won contracts worth $9.7 billion.
Shares of Samsung Heavy closed at 44,100 won on the Seoul bourse, down 0.9 percent.
