LG Innotek sues Osram, Hella over LED in China

SEOUL, July 28 (Yonhap) -- LG Innotek Co., an electronics parts-making unit of LG Group, said Thursday that it has sued Osram GmbH and Hella KGaA Hueck & Co. in China over light-emitting diode (LED) patent infringements.
LG's latest move intensifies the patent war between Osram, a light-making unit of Germany-based Siemens AG, and Korean LED makers, which are embroiled in lawsuits in at least three countries.
LG said it filed a lawsuit with a Beijing court seeking compensation and a sales ban on LED products sold in China by Osram's Chinese unit and Hella, a German maker of auto components.
The Korean company accused Osram of infringing on its LED technologies, demanding the Chinese court ban sales of five LED products, including a car headlamp made by Hella, which uses Osram's LED package, it said.
China accounts for at least 30 percent of the global LED sales, LG said.
Earlier in the day, LG also filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) against three affiliates of Osram, demanding a sales ban on products that use its LED patents without permission. The Korean company also lodged a similar lawsuit with a Delaware court, it said.
LG claimed that Osram violated eight LED technologies.
In June, Osram accused LED-making units of South Korea's two industrial giants, Samsung and LG, of infringing on its LED technologies and filed complaints with the U.S. ITC, a U.S. district court and a German court.
