Seoul sees heaviest daily downpour ever for July

SEOUL, July 28 (Yonhap) -- Seoul was soaked with 301.5 millimeters of rain on Wednesday, the largest amount of daily precipitation ever recorded during the month of July, the state weather agency said Thursday.
The previous record for July was 296.4 mm set on July 27, 1987, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said.
On a yearly basis, Wednesday's precipitation in the capital will also go down as the third-largest single-day volume, said the KMA, which began tracking such data in 1907.

The heaviest rainfall in a century caused massive landslides, killing 16 in a southern Seoul landslide alone. As of 1 p.m., Seoul has received a total of 530mm of rain since Tuesday, while an additional 150mm of rain is expected through Friday, the agency said.
The rain-triggered landslides also destroyed hundreds of homes, leaving 1,063 Seoul residents homeless. Flooding was reported in streets, subway stations, underground walkways and residential districts throughout the capital city and caused massive traffic jams and power outages, KMA officials said.
Seoul's surrounding areas also experienced record-breaking downpours on Wednesday, with Dongducheon of Gyeonggi Province, north of Seoul, receiving an all-time high of 449.5 mm, the weather agency said.
