Former Incheon mayor faces prosecution probe over alleged misuse of public funds

SEOUL, July 28 (Yonhap) -- The state audit agency said Thursday it has requested that prosecutors launch an investigation into suspicions that a former Incheon mayor used public funds for personal purposes without proper documentation.
Ahn Sang-soo, 64, the mayor of the western port city from 2006-2010, is suspected of raising 522 million won (US$496,000) for personal use by having an aide falsify expense documents, the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) said.
The aide, whose name was withheld, has admitted that he faked expense documents to make it look like the mayor gave bonuses to about 400 employees and that Ahn spent some of the funds for personal purposes, including golf fees, presents and incentives to employees at other organizations, BAI officials said.
The audit agency uncovered the wrongdoings while inspecting expenses of the Incheon city government with regard to its hosting of the Global Fair and Festival in 2009, officials said.
