Japan's lawmakers to visit island near Dokdo next week: report
TOKYO, July 29 (Yonhap) -- Japan's main opposition party has decided to allow four of its members to make a diplomatically explosive trip to a South Korean island near Dokdo, according to a Japanese newspaper.
Japan claims Dokdo, a set of South Korean rocky outcroppings in the East Sea.
The Sankei Shimbun, a Japanese daily, reported Friday that the leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will permit them to visit Ulleung Island on Aug. 2 as planned.
South Korea has strongly protested the visit, but can do nothing legally to prevent it.
The LDP emphasized that it would be a "personal visit," not formally associated with the party, the newspaper said.
Ulleung Island is about 90 kilometers west of Dokdo, which Japan claims as a legacy of its imperial past.
The Japanese government has asked the lawmakers to refrain from such a controversial act, but also called on Seoul to guarantee their security if they press ahead with the trip.
