S. Korea to dispatch troops to peacekeeping exercise in Mongolia

SEOUL, July 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will dispatch troops to an annual multinational peacekeeping exercise in Mongolia later this month, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) here said Friday.
The JCS said 39 South Korean soldiers will participate in the annual Khan Quest exercise in Mongolia. The exercise is set for July 31-Aug. 12.
Mongolia has held Khan Quest every year since 2003, with the help of the U.S. Pacific Command. South Korea sent working-level officers as an observing nation from 2006 to 2008 and became a full participant in 2009 with a platoon of 27 Marines taking part. Nine South Korean troops went to Khan Quest last year.
The JCS said the South Korean delegation will include a platoon of peacekeepers, supporting instructors and observers.
This year, about 900 troops from 11 countries, including Australia, Cambodia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan and Thailand, will be in Mongolia, the JCS said.
During Khan Quest, instructors with experience in overseas peacekeeping operations offer practical drills in realistic settings. This year's exercise will be held at a camp some 56 kilometers west of the capital Ulan Bator, according to the JCS.
South Korea currently has 635 peacekeepers in eight global missions, including in Haiti and Lebanon, while 818 others are serving in separate multinational operations, according to the foreign ministry.
