Downpours cause N. Korea's military to scale back exercises: source

SEOUL, July 29 (Yonhap) -- North Korea prepared for military exercises on the west coast involving all three branches of its armed forces, but recent torrential rains led it to scale back its drill, a government source here said Friday.
"We earlier detected signs that North Korea's military might do exercises after putting in place warships and fighter planes at a naval base in Nampo and its aerial base in Onchon, but the scale of the drill was reduced," a source said.
"The North withdrew some of its troops and equipment mobilized for the two-day drills."
Military sources said the North's military tried to conduct massive exercises on Wednesday, but it seemed to reduce its forces on drills due to bad weather as the downpours inundated some of its military camps.
Wednesday marked the 58th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War. The two Koreas remains technically at war.
The two bases are located in the North's western province, north of the tense Yellow Sea border, which has been a constant source of military tensions between the two Koreas with several bloody naval skirmishes taking place.
A blast of torrential rains pounded North Korea this week, causing casualties and flooding houses. In July alone, Nampo was hit by a total of 308 millimeters of precipitation.
