Peykan Grabs First Place in Asian Volleyball Championship

TEHRAN (FNA)- Peykan volleyball club of Tehran province won Kazakhstan's Almaty and claimed the top spot in Indonesia's Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship.
The Iranian squad blanked Kazakhstan's Almaty in the final in the Sriwijaya Sport Hall in the southeastern city of Palembang on Saturday.

Peykan beat Almaty in three successive sets 25-16, 25-15, and 25-19.

Paykan has won the title seven times, six times in a row from 2006 to 2011 and once in 2002.

Paykan routed Almaty 3-1 in the first round.

On the way to the title, they also defeated Al-Rayyan of Qatar, Talyp Sporty of Turkmenistan, Myanmar's Asia World, Indonesia's Bank Sumsel Babel, the Chinese club Shanghai Tang Dynasty, and Chang of Thailand.

Iranian volleyball player Hamzeh Zarrini was named the most valuable player of the tournament.

Earlier in the day, Shanghai Tang Dynasty beat Sakai of Japan 3-0 in the third-place playoff.

With the victory, Peykan booked a berth in the FIVB Club World Championships, which will be held in Doha, Qatar from October 8 to 14.

The Iranian champions have been drawn in Pool A along with Jastrzebski Wegiel of Poland, Trinity Western Spartans of Canada, and Russia's Zenit Kazan.

Pool B is comprised of Italian club Trentino, Egypt's Al-Ahli, Qatar's Al-Arabi, and the champion of South America, which has not been determined yet.
