Navy instructor indicted for violating National Security Law
SEOUL, Aug. 1 (Yonhap) -- A Navy instructor at the Naval Academy has been indicted on charges of breaking the National Security Law by using pro-North Korean teaching materials, a military official said Monday.
The official said a Navy lieutenant junior grade, surnamed Kim, was indicted by military prosecutors at the academy in June and his first trial is set for Aug. 9.
According to the official, Kim, who taught Korean history at the academy, downloaded a paper on North Korean founder Kim Il-sung's participation in an anti-Japanese movement during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea from 1910-1945, and another on the history of North Korean armed forces.
The official said Kim had acquired these papers from a theses portal Web site to use them as references for his lectures and for his cadets' reports. Kim's teaching materials included Karl Marx's "Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right" and Vladimir Lenin's "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism."
The official added prosecutors also learned that Kim had included some of Kim Il-sung's alleged accomplishments in his anti-Japanese campaign in his course syllabus in 2009.
