American teachers to take lecture on Korean culture

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1 (Yonhap) -- A group of 65 American teachers at primary, middle and high schools in the United States will learn about Korean culture, history, society, and other topics under a summer program provided by a South Korean government institute.
The five-day program that opened Monday is aimed at broadening understanding of Korea among U.S. teachers for use in class, the Korea Culture Center in Los Angeles said.
Attending the program, co-organized with the civilian Korea Academy for Educators, are 65 teachers from 32 educational districts in 18 states, it added.
"They will learn about Korean history, culture, philosophy, and society as well as the annals of Korean people's immigration and understanding on Korean students and parents," the center said.
Participants will also experience Korea's traditional food, music and tea-drinking culture, it said.
Lecturers include John Duncan, director of the Center for Korean Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, David Kang, professor of international relations and business at the University of Southern California, and Shin Gi-wook, director of Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at Stanford University.
The annual program was launched in 2004.
