Cabinet approves bill to enhance security for int'l conferences

By Kim Eun-jung
SEOUL (Yonhap) - The Cabinet approved on Tuesday a revision of the presidential security law that calls for establishing an inter-agency security body for international conferences involving foreign leaders, officials said Tuesday.
The move came ahead of next year's global summit on nuclear security to be held in South Korea.
The revised law allows the chief of Presidential Security Service broad power to designate a safety zone around the summit venue and take security measures for key government agencies and public buildings when necessary.
The new law will be applied when South Korea hosts the next Nuclear Security Summit in March to discuss nuclear safety and combating atomic smuggling, which is expected to bringing leaders of 47 nations. It is seen as a symbolic occasion for the country, where North Korea's nuclear defiance has been the pressing crisis.
In November last year, Seoul hosted a Group of 20 summit with leaders from the world's advanced economies.
