Ssangyong Motor to resume sales in Britain

SEOUL (Yonhap) - Ssangyong Motor Co., South Korea's smallest automaker, said Tuesday that it will resume sales in Britain starting in October, as part of efforts to expand its presence in the European market.
Ssangyong will use the 130 dealerships operated by Bassadone Automotive Ltd. to sell its Korando C sport utility vehicle (SUV), said the company controlled by Indian SUV maker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
The move marks the first time that Ssangyong will sell its vehicles in the European country after it was forced to pull out in 2009 following the onset of the global financial crisis.
Ssangyong said it aims to sell 1,000 Korandos this year, raising the volume to 5,000 units in 2013. The SUV was first unveiled in late 2010 and reached South Korean consumers in March.
"Shipments to Britain that began in late July are part of a broad plan to regain Ssangyong's overseas sales network and increase exports," a company spokesperson said.
The company, which sold a monthly high of 10,763 vehicles in July, had withdrawn from selling cars in Britain because of weak sales and the need to cut costs when it went under court receivership in early 2009.
Ssangyong, previously owned by China's Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp., experienced tough times when its Chinese parent abandoned it in the face of the then unfolding global financial crisis. Mahindra & Mahindra took over Ssangyong in late 2010.
