NEW TABLE ORDER
As the Supreme Military Council (YAS) meeting, awaited impatiently as the chief of general staff and three force commanders asked for their retirement, began on Monday, there were many changes in the sitting order at the table. Acting Chief of General Staff and Land Forces Commander Gen. Necdet Ozel sat on the right of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This view was interpreted as political will indicated that the General Staff was under its authority as in all democratic countries.
In the previous meetings, the National Defense Minister was sitting on the right of Premier Erdogan. Newly-designated Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz, who attended the council meeting for the first time on Monday, sat on Erdogan's left. This was the first time air, naval and gendarme commanders were not represented in the level of force commander.
Premier Erdogan went to Prime Ministry Residence after visiting Anitkabir, the Mausoleum of Ataturk, and had a one-hour-forty-five-minute meeting with Gen. Necdet Ozel there even though this was not scheduled. YAS did not hold its afternoon session.
