Watchdog says 1 in 5 TV program titles has awkward foreign word
SEOUL, Aug. 2 (Yonhap) -- More than one in five local TV program titles contain inappropriate foreign words, a broadcasting regulator said Tuesday.
About 21.8 percent of the 358 programs aired by the four terrestrial-based networks -- KBS, MBC, SBS and EBS -- between May 30 and June 5 had titles containing unnecessary and awkwardly made-up English words or ungrammatical Korean words, the Korea Communications Standard Commission said in a report.
Some of the TV programs for children surveyed had awkward names such as "Canimal" and "Magination," according to the report.
News programs were found to have the highest frequency of using improper words and expressions in their names.
Some of the unnecessarily contained English words were "Time," "Magazine," "Today" and "Night," the commission said.
The most frequently used English words in entertainment programs were "Happy," "Together," "Sunday," "Music" and "Bank," it said.
"We need to keep in mind that there are many TV programs beloved by watchers that don't use foreign words in their titles," the report said. "TV producers must make efforts to create fresh program names using Korean words."
