Iranian President Felicitates Qatari Emir on Start of Ramadan

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a phone conversation felicitated Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifah al-Thani on the start of the holy month of Ramadan, a season of fasting and spiritual reflection.
President Ahmadinejad also congratulated the occasion to the Muslims of the world, considering it an appropriate opportunity for strengthening the spirit brotherhood, cooperation and harmony in regional and international developments.

Al-Thani, for his part, felicitated the blessed occasion to the Iranian Government and people, wishing for the prosperity and well being of the entire Islamic world.

Muslims in Iran and other countries are preparing to welcome Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, when they fast from dawn to dusk.

Fasting is intended to teach Muslims about faith, spirituality, self-accountability and self-restraint.

Iranians welcome the holy month of Ramadan with special ceremonies such as cleaning religious centers and mosques, since they are packed with fasting Muslims who try to spend their time praying and getting closer to God.

Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured; from dawn until sunset.

Fasting is meant to teach Muslims patience, modesty and spirituality. Ramadan is a time to fast for the sake of Allah, and to offer more prayer than usual.
