Spokesman Dismisses Media Reports about Deceleration of Iran's N. Activities

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast dismissed media reports claiming that the country has decelerated its nuclear activities in the Fordo enrichment plant near the city of Qom in Central Iran.
"Iran's peaceful nuclear activities are progressing well based on the specified plans and timeline," Mehman-Parast told reporters in his weekly press conference on Tuesday.
He also reiterated the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program, and said all nuclear activities of the country are carried out within the framework of Tehran's undertakings based on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s rules and regulations.
The Fordo site is Iran's second uranium enrichment plant - after the Natanz facility also in Central Iran - for the production of nuclear fuel enriched to a 5 percent grade.
The Islamic Republic informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of the plant's existence on September 21, long before the due time specified in the IAEA rules and regulations.
Tehran also informed the UN nuclear watchdog agency that the site, which remains under construction, would enrich uranium only to the low 5 percent purity level suitable for power plant fuel.
Tehran in June announced plans to expand its nuclear fuel production capacity in a move to triple production of 20-percent-enriched uranium to supply fuel to its Tehran research reactor which produces radioisotopes for medicinal use.
"This year, we will transfer the 20-percent-uranium enrichment (installations) from Natanz (in central Iran) to the Fordo plant (near the holy city of Qom) under the supervision of the IAEA and will triple its (production) capacity," Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereidoon Abbasi told reporters here in Tehran at the time.
Meantime, Abbasi reiterated that the activities in Natanz enrichment plant will not stop until "we, under the IAEA supervision, make sure of tripled 20-percent fuel production".
"After we triple the production capacity in the Fordo plant, we will stop the operation of the 20-percent fuel production section of the Natanz plant and will transfer it to Fordo completely," he added.
