Celebration of 450th anniversary of Vientiane as capital on track

(KPL) The Mayor of Vientiane Capital gave a progress report on the preparations for the celebration of the 450th anniversary Vientiane as capital in 2010 (1560-2010). He said the celebrations would involve seven programmes and would proceed in two stages. Six sub-committees have been set up to oversee the study and dissemination of the history of Vientiane capital, the study and identification of the Vientiane town plan, economic and budget issues of the celebrations, campaigns, arts and literature, security and defence, and infrastructure construction in the capital.
During the course of the preparation for the celebrations, 21 major projects have been launched to beautify and improve Vientiane Capital. These range from the renovation of Road No. 1, the upgrade of the National Stadium, the construction of the Saysettha Park, the relocation and construction of the Monument for Unknown Soldiers, the embankment and park construction projects along the Mekong River, the Nongtha Park construction project, the construction of a 20-km long road to mark the 450th celebration from Dong Dok to Thanaleng, the construction of a new urban area, the Vientiane-Nong Khai railway, the modernisation of five major markets in the capital.
Vientiane Mayor, Dr. Sinlavong Khoudphaythoune, said at the Vientiane Administration Office on 2 September that as part of the preparation, an embankment would be built on the banks of the Mekong River. To commence in November 2008 and scheduled to be completed in 2010, the construction will be funded by a loan of US$32 million from the Republic of Korea and an additional US$6 million from Laos.
The aims of the celebration are to get the Lao people, especially the people of Vientiane to have a good knowledge of Vientiane and to make known to the world about Laos and its capital city.
