Australia, Czech Republic announce teams for world championships

SEOUL (Yonhap) - Australia and the Czech Republic have finalized their teams for the World Championships in Athletics scheduled to kick off later this month in South Korea, the international athletics governing body said Wednesday.
The International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) said Australia will send 47 athletes to Daegu, some 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The championships are set for Aug. 27-Sept. 4.



Australia will be led by two reigning world champions -- Steve Hooker in men's pole vault and Dani Samuels in women's discus throw.
Sally Pearson will be a contender in women's 100-meter hurdles. She has the fastest time this season at 12.48 seconds. In men's long jump, Mitchell Watt has the season-best world record of 8.54 meters.
Australia ranked 10th at the previous world championships in 2009 in Berlin with two gold and two bronze medals.
The Czech Republic is sending 21 athletes, including Barbora Spotakova, the 2007 world champ in women's javelin throw and the holder of the top record in 2011 at 69.45 m.
Zuzana Hejnova is the season leader in women's 400 節? hurdles at 53.29 seconds.
The Czechs earned a silver at the 2009 championships.
