Hanwha inks sponsorship deal with German football team

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea's Hanwha Group said Wednesday that it has signed a sponsorship contract with a German football club in an effort to boost its brand awareness in the European market.
Under the deal with Hamburger Sport-Verein (HSV) that runs from 2011 to 2013, Hanwha will be permitted to show its brand logo of HanwhaSolar at the football team's home stadium and on its Web site, Hanwha said. The group did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.
South Korean young football star Son Heung-min now plays for HSV, one of the oldest clubs in Germany, founded in 1887. The club finished eighth in Germany's Budesliga last season.
Hanwha said that the sponsorship will pave the way for the company to get closer to consumers in Germany, the biggest solar energy market in the world. The company has focused its investment on the green energy sector for years.
"The sponsorship deal is our first step to raise brand awareness in Europe," said Hong Ki-joon, chief executive of Hanwha Chemical Corp., which handles the solar energy business of the group. "We will establish our status as a global brand in the European market within five years."
