S. Korea's food exports top US$4 bln

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea's exports of food and agricultural products surged more than 30 percent in the first seven months of this year on string shipments to Asian countries, the government said Wednesday.
Food exports reached US$4.07 billion in the January-July period, up 32.2 percent from the same period a year earlier, according to the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Shipments of ginseng, herbal roots mostly used for medicinal purposes, more than doubled from $56.3 million in the January-July period of 2010 to $116.6 million. Cigarettes continued to be the single largest export item with 25,100 tons, worth $295.7 million, shipped overseas this year.
"If the rising trend continues, the country will easily reach its annual target of $7.6 billion this year," the ministry said.
By country, exports to China increased by the largest margin of 59 percent with shipments to Southeast Asian countries rising 52.8 percent on-year.
"The government will continue to help increase the country's food exports by exploring new markets and employing new market strategies for each item and market," it said.
