SEOUL (Yonhap) - A reigning Olympic race walk champion will lead Italy at the upcoming World Championships in Athletics, the international athletics governing body said Thursday.
According to the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF), Italy will bring a team of 33 athletes for the Aug. 27-Sept. 4 championships in Daegu, about 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul.
Alex Schwazer, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in men's 50-kilometer race walk, is the best hope for a medal. Female high jumper Antonietta Di Martino holds the world's second-best record this year with 2.04 meters.
Simona La Mantia is this year's European champion in women's triple jump.
Italy was shut out of the medals at the previous world championships in Berlin in 2009.
