S. Korean automakers' H1 exports jump 15.1 pct

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea's five automakers saw their first-half exports and offshore production jump on brisk overseas demand for their products with improving quality and brand image, a government report said Thursday.
The automakers, led by Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp., shipped 1.54 million cars in the January-June period, up 15.1 percent from a year earlier, according to the report by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
Their overseas production jumped 22.7 percent on-year to reach a record high of 1.51 million vehicles. The automakers also include GM Korea Co., the South Korean unit of U.S. automaker General Motors Co., Renault Samsung Motors Co., the local unit of French automaker Renault SA, and Ssangyong Motor Co.
"The record overseas production is attributable to a recent recovery in the global automobile market and heightened global evaluation of South Korean cars' quality and dependability," the ministry report said.
The automakers earlier said their combined sales in overseas and domestic markets jumped 14.1 percent on-year to 4.41 million units in the first seven months of the year.
Thursday's report said the automakers' overseas production will likely rise 8 percent on-year to 1.48 million units in the second half of the year to reach an annual record of about 3 million vehicles.
The ministry said the country's domestic market will also continue to grow with its annual sales expected to reach 1.6 million vehicles, up 10.2 percent from 1.46 million units sold here last year.
