Dozens of IOC members expected in Daegu for joint meeting

By Yoo Jee-ho
SEOUL (Yonhap) - Dozens of International Olympic Committee (IOC) members are expected to descend on Daegu, the site of this summer's World Championships in Athletics, officials said Thursday.
According to the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) and the championship organizers, as many as 50 IOC members, or at least 30, could make the trip this month. The Daegu organizers and the KOC, along with Daegu Mayor Kim Bum-il and Culture Minister Choung Byoung-gug, recently sent joint invitations to 69 IOC members, officials said.
The IOC's executive board and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) are scheduled to hold a meeting on Aug. 26, a day before the eight-day world championships kick off. The joint meeting has been a tradition at the signature IAAF event.
Officials said Jacques Rogge, president of the IOC, will also pay a courtesy call to President Lee Myung-bak. In Daegu, Rogge will be accompanied by all 15 members of the executive board.
Most of the visiting IOC members will stay in Daegu for five days to watch the world championships and take a tour around the country.
The IOC members are also expected to visit PyeongChang, the host of the 2018 Winter Olympics, and be briefed about the alpine town's preparations for the Olympics.
