Japan grants over JPY5 bln for two main development projects
VIENTIANE,AUG (KPL)- The Japanese government has granted over 5.2 billion yens for two main basic infrastructure development projects in Vientiane and Savannakhet.
The projects are the Expansion of Vientiane International Airport (JPY1.9 bln) and the Improvement of National Road No.9 as the GMS’s East-West Economic Corridor (JPY3.2 bln).
The exchange of notes signing ceremony for the grant assistance of the Japanese government took place between Japan’s Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister for the Lao PDR Thongloun Sisoulith at the Iikura Guest House in Tokyo, Japan.
This project is of great importance for Lao PDR to improve safety and security of the International Airport in Vientiane which has been playing an important role as the national economic hub.
It comprises expansion of aircraft parking apron, upgrade of security equipments and other measures to prepare for the future demand of the airport.
The Road No.9 is an international trunk road and forms a main part of “East-West Corridor” crossing Indochina.
It aims to facilitate the exchange of people as well as smooth transportation of local commodities in the region by rehabilitating damaged areas and overlaying certain section of the Road. In this regard, the project is expected to contribute greatly to boost the economy in GMS countries, in particular, the economy of central and southern part of Laos.
Japan Ambassador to Laos Junko YOKOTA, senior officials of both countries witnessed the signing.
