Japan further supports UXO Clearance in Attapue

VIENTIANE,AUG (KPL)- The Japanese government has further agreed to grant US$434,239 for Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS) on the 1st anniversary since the Convention on Cluster Munitions came into force, according to press release of Japan Embassy in Laos on 2 August.
The grant will be used for the UXO clearance in Attapeu province through the Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS), a Japanese NGO which has been working in Laos mainly in the area of UXO, to implement the project for “Support to Lao National Unexploded Ordnance Program (UXO Lao) in Attapeue Province (The First Stage)” under the Grant Assistance Scheme for Japanese NGO’s Projects.”
The grant contract of project was signed on 2 August at the Embassy of Japan in the Lao P.D.R between Mr. Shigeru Omori, Charge Affaires of Japan to the Lao PDR and Mr. Junichi Kurokawa, representative of JMAS Lao office.
This project will be carried out in Attapue province in cooperate with UXO Lao from August 2011 to August 2012. JMAS’s specialist will transfer the technique of UXO clearance and conduct Community Awareness activities in Attapue so as to secure safety livelihood in Attapeue province.
JMAS completed the five year UXO clearance project in Xiengkhouang province (2006-2011) and 1 year project in Attapeu province (2010-2011).
