India to cooperate with Russia in building big NPP, not floating ones.
MOSCOW, August 4 (Itar-Tass) -- India will build big modern nuclear
power plants and cooperation with Russian in this field is a priority,
Consulting Fellow at the Indian Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis
G. Balachandran said.
Speaking during a videoconference titled "Russian-Indian Nuclear
Cooperation. Possibilities and Prospects" on Wednesday, August 3, he said
India had no interest in small nuclear power plants, including floating
ones, at the moment.
Balachandran recalled that the construction of two units at the
Kudankulam nuclear power plant under a Russian project was nearing
completion. India plans to build another four reactors of the same type.
Floating nuclear power plants are a promising area but it is of
interests for countries with a small population or those that are
experiencing a shortage of fresh water, he said.
In addition, the latest accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power
plant in Japan exposed problems in international legislation with regard
to safe and reliable operation of such nuclear power plants and their
protection from terrorist threats, Balachandran said.
