Ruling party gearing up to submit U.S. trade bill this month

By Kim Eun-jung
SEOUL, Aug. 5 (Yonhap) - The ruling Grand National Party (GNP) will push to submit the long-pending free trade deal with the U.S. to the National Assembly this month, in a move to keep pace with Washington's effort to get the deal through Congress in September, officials said Friday.
The move comes shortly after U.S. Congressional leaders said they have agreed on a path to approve the trade agreement with South Korea, which was also backed by President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner.
GNP lawmakers welcomed their support, though Washington's agreement fell short of their expectation to pass the deal before the August recess due to the standoff over raising the debt ceiling.
"We have to submit the deal (to the parliament) in August," said GNP lawmaker Nam Kyung-pil, who chairs the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, trade and unification. "(The agreement) is meaningful because it provided an opportunity to have deep discussions about the free trade deal at the National Assembly."
He made the remarks before the ruling and opposition party legislators as well as ministers of foreign affairs, trade and finance had a consultative meeting at the National Assembly to discuss the ratification process and further measures.
