Buryatia to open regular air service with China.

ULAN-UDE, August 5 (Itar-Tass) - Russia's Buryatia republic will open
a regular air service with China.
The press service of the government of Buryatia told Itar-Tass on
Friday that from August 16 the RusLine air carrier will be flying its
airliners en route Ulan-Ude - Manchuria. "Flights to the city of Manchuria
in the north-eastern China, will be performed twice a week on comfortable
Canadian-made liners Bombardier, which are designed to carry 50
passengers," a government official said.
The cost of a roundtrip ticket will be about 10,000 roubles. It will
take about two hours to fly to the popular among Russians centre of
shopping tourism in the neighbouring country. The same trip by car or rail
will take a day, excluding the border crossing formalities.
"We estimate that the flight will be in demand among businessmen of
Ulan-Ude, because Manchuria is the closest to Buryatia Chinese city and
one of the main points of import purchases, as well as tourists from the
two countries," Vera Ampilogova, sales manager of RusLine, said.
The opening of this flight is the result of a long work of the
Government of Buryatia, the RF Transport Ministry, Federal Air Transport
Agency and the administration of Manchuria. Thanks to the joint efforts
the flight was included by the two countries' aviation authorities in the
table of routes of the Russian - Chinese intergovernmental agreement on
air services. For the international airport Baikal of Ulan-Ude the flight
to China will be the second regular foreign route. Last June a regular air
service between Buryatia and Mongolia was opened.
Ulan-Ude (Lake Baikal Airport) is an international airport located 12
kilometres (7.5 mi) west of Ulan-Ude. The airport includes a single
terminal built in early 1980s featuring customs and border control
facilities. With capacity of 400 passengers per hour, the airport served
167,126 passengers in 2010, a 29 percent increase over 2009. In 2006, the
airport received a major runway overhaul costing RUR 330 million (USD 10
million). Another RUR 230 million was to be spent in 2007, finishing
taxiway and parking areas work. In November 2006, the Russian government
announced the decision to create a special economic zone 170 km away of
Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal with plans of upgrading the airport. The plans
include building a second runway, enlarging the original runway, and
improving passenger facilities - to accommodate one million passengers in
2010.
Since May 2011, the IFC Metropol investment-financial company owns the
Baikal international airport. It bought 100 percent shares of the Ulan-Ude
airport from Austria's MAL fund. Immediately after the deal the new owners
and administration of the airport declared that they intend to increase
the number of destination from Ulan-Ude to neighbouring countries. For the
expansion of the Russian regional transportation they did not rule out the
creation of a local air company. In addition, an order for reconstruction
of Baikal airport has been placed with the Japanese company Nikken Sekkei
that is developing on an order from Metropol a project of an international
tourism centre at Turka port.
