FM Underscores Importance of Consolidation of Iran-Africa Ties

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi reiterated on Saturday that his country attaches much importance and value to its relations with African countries, and asked for increased visits by the two sides' officials.
Salehi made the remarks in a meeting with his Beninese counterpart Nassirou Arifari Bako here in Tehran today, where he reiterated that Iran favors further deepening of its relations with the African continent.
He also underlined the geopolitical and geostrategic importance of Benin in Africa, and called for the further expansion of economic, trade and industrial cooperation between the two countries.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's administration has striven hard to maximize relations with the African continent.
Iran is also an observing member of the AU and has shown an active presence in previous AU summit meetings.
The country is considered as one of the AU's strategic partners along with India, Japan, China, several South American states and Turkey, while Tehran is also believed to be prioritizing promotion of its economic and political ties with the African states.
