Iran to Help Venezuela Construct 10,000 Houses

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran and Venezuela have signed a $1 billion deal to build 10,000 houses in the Latin American country, a statement by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said.
The houses will be constructed over the next 18 months in the Venezuelan states of Yaracuy, Lara and Carabobo and are expected to house 45,000 people.

The statement didn't mention how much each country would contribute to the effort.

The Venezuelan government in April kicked off a project to build 2 million homes over the next 7 years with cooperation agreements already signed with Russia, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, China and Belarus.

Venezuela is hoping to alleviate a chronic housing shortfall in a country with some 28.8 million inhabitants in 2010 there were just 2 million homes.

Since taking office in 2005, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has expanded Iran's cooperation with many Latin American states, including Venezuela, Bolivia and Cuba.

But the strong and rapidly growing ties between Iran and Venezuela have raised eyebrows in the US and its western allies since Tehran and Caracas have forged an alliance against the imperialist and colonialist powers and are striving hard to reinvigorate their relations with the other independent countries which pursue a line of policy independent from the US.
