FM Urges Probe into Death of Iranian Diplomats in Afghanistan

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi called for a continued probe into the death of the 8 Iranian diplomats and the reporter who were killed by the Taliban forces in Mazar-e-Sharif in Northern Afghanistan 13 years ago.
Salehi made the remarks in a meeting with the families of the diplomats and the reporter at the foreign ministry.
He appreciated the patience shown by the families of the diplomats and the reporter, and underlined that the Iranian people always remember the valuable memories of these martyrs.
On August 8, 1998 Taliban forces captured Mazari Sharif city in Northern Afghanistan. After this incident, 11 Iranian diplomats and 1 Iran's state news agency (IRNA) correspondent disappeared. Unofficial reports from the city indicated that all these men were killed.
Later it was confirmed that 8 of the Iranian diplomats and the IRNA correspondent were killed by the Taliban militia attacking the consulate. It was also reported that some of the personnel of the consulate were taken hostage by the invaders, but they were later released.
