Japan to launch education program aimed at preventing youth suicide+
TOKYO, Aug. 7 Kyodo -
The Japanese education ministry decided Sunday to launch an education program aimed at preventing youth suicide, and will select schools as soon as fiscal 2013 in which to run a pilot program.
According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, about 150 school children commit suicide each year in Japan. In fiscal 2010, 147 children killed themselves.
Since bullying is believed to often be the cause, educationalists have worked to devise countermeasures against it. Still, schools have yet to come up with an effective solution as various factors, such as a student's home environment, are also responsible for youth suicide, a senior education ministry official said.
The ministry plans to convene a meeting of experts in the near future to discuss how to design the program, and after also studying similar programs in the United States, incorporate the program into curricula at elementary, junior high and high schools.
At U.S. schools, students are advised to talk to adults when they hear of friends with serious troubles. And if teachers find students at high risk of suicide, by using questionnaires designed to measure such risk, they may choose to contact counselors.
By promoting effective suicide prevention education at schools, the ministry hopes to lower the nation's suicide rate. About 30,000 people kill themselves each year in Japan.
