Senior MP: Beirut Not to Allow Israel to Exploit Lebanese Oil, Gas Resources

TEHRAN (FNA)- Leader of the 'Loyalty to the Resistance' bloc at the Lebanese parliament Mohammad Raad reiterated that Beirut will no more allow the Zionist regime to exploit its oil and gas resources.
"We will not allow Israel to exploit our territorial waters similar to the past," Raad said in Nabatiyah city, Southern Lebanon, on Sunday.

"When materializing the rights of the Lebanese people, specially in oil and gas fields, we have no tolerance for the Zionist regime and its plots," he added.

Lebanon and Israel entered a dispute over maritime borders, covering an area of approximately 854 square kilometers, with both sides eager to start drilling for oil and gas reserves.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati told Cabinet members Tuesday that Lebanon was committed to defending its rights in territorial waters and its investments in oil and gas fields in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which called for a ceasefire after the Israeli 2006 war on Lebanon.

A draft of the proposed delineation law for Lebanon's maritime areas was approved by a joint parliamentary committee Monday.

In line with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which Lebanon signed in 1994, the country is obliged to draft a law specifying maritime areas under its sovereignty.

Mikati said that despite two recent attacks targeting Italian and French peacekeeping soldiers on the Sidon coastal highway, the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon were still committed to the implementation of Resolution 1701.
