EU offers new rules for Lao exports

VIENTIANE,AUG.(KPL)- The Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Laos in collaboration with the department of Import and Export Control, Ministry of Industry and Commerce yesterday held a full-day trade seminar under the title ‘The New EU-GSP Rules of Origin” to help Lao exporters overcome the challenges that prevent them from fully benefiting from the EU preferential trade arrangements with Laos.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Henry PRANKERD - Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Delegation of the European Commission to Lao PDR said that the new rules of EU will provide chances for all products from the least developed countries, particularly Laos access to the EU markets. The new rules of EU will also provide a number of benefits for industrial factories and producers of Laos. The new rules of EU is also a part of contribution to further strengthening the co-operation on trade and investment between Laos and EU.
In 2009, the trade value between EU and Laos has reached Euro 227 million. The main products exported from Laos to EU markets are clothing and garment products which covered 71% of all products exported to EU markets.
According to Mr. Khemphet Sihavong, Director General of Import and Export Department, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the new regulations will require all products arriving in the EU to be accompanied with certificates of origin and will also place a focus on goods imported from developing nations.
