Turkey sends first aid shipment to Somalia

ANKARA (A.A) - August 8, 2011 - Two cargo planes carrying food and medical supplies took off on Monday in Turkey's first aid shipment to the famine-stricken Somalia.
The aid campaign was launched jointly by the Turkish Red Crescent Society, Turkey's Cooperation and Development Agency, and the country's Religious Affairs Directorate General.
The aid includes 50 tones of food supplies that can sustain 1,500 families for a month including baby formula, milk powder, baby biscuits, pasta, rice, lentils, chickpeas, flour, and sugar.
The aid also includes 10 tones of medical supplies.
The World Food Program estimates that 10 million people already need humanitarian aid. The U.N. Children's Fund estimates that more than 2 million children are malnourished and in need of lifesaving action in the region.
