Police SWAT teams deployed at major airports

SEOUL, Aug. 9 (Yonhap) -- Police said Tuesday they have deployed special forces officers at major airports across the country, beefing up security for the upcoming international athletics competition.
The National Police Agency (NPA) said SWAT officers will be on patrol at airports to guard for contingencies before the World Championships in Athletics, set for Aug. 27-Sept. 4 in Daegu, some 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul.
The signature event for the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) is expected to bring together about 2,500 athletes from at least 207 countries, along with thousands of officials, media and fans. Athletes will start arriving in Daegu on Wednesday.
The NPA said a separate patrol unit will be based at Daegu International Airport, the main gateway into the host city. An additional 80 officers were deployed there Tuesday to start round-the-clock security operations.
