Number of presidential aspirants increases to 41 in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK, August 9 (Itar-Tass) - The number of candidates for the
Kyrgyz presidency has increased to 41, Itar-Tass learnt on Thursday at the
press service of the Central Election Commission on Elections and
Referendums (CEC).
"Nine people were slated by political parties, and the rest are
independents," the press service noted.
The list of hopefuls includes present and former members of the
national parliament, diplomats, businessmen, the jobless, housewives,
farmers, civil servants, a retired colonel and reporters. "The nomination
procedure will be over on August 16, and it will be followed by
registration of candidates," the CEC noted.
To accomplish this procedure successfully, contestants are to make a
deposit of 100,000 soms (some 2,200 US dollars), to form a fund whose size
should not top 50 million soms (1.1 million dollars), to collect 30,000
signatures of voters in support and to pass an examination in the
knowledge of the Kyrgyz language.
However, local political scientists believe that the number of
claimants for the top state post will shrank considerably closer to the
presidential elections, set for October 30. Experts also believe that only
a few people can really hope for the victory out of the present list.
These are party leaders Omurbek Tekebayev, Adakhan Madumarov and Kamchybek
Tashiev as well as independents Omurbek Suvanaliev and Akbaraly Aitikeyev.
Besides, incumbent Prime Minister Almazbek Atambayev has not announced
so far his intention to join the election race. It is quite probable that
he will do this over the next few days.
The Kyrgyz president is elected for a six-year term. The candidate is
to be no younger than 35 years and no older than 70, to be a citizen of
the republic and to live in its territory over the past 15 years. The
interim president of the country is Roza Otunbayeva, elected in June 2010,
following the overthrow (2.5 months earlier) of President Kurmanbek
Bakiev. Under the law, Otunbayeva has no right to run for the presidency
again.
