Nanoporous Materials Optimize Desulphurization of Fuels

TEHRAN (FNA)- Researchers from Iran's University of Science and Technology succeeded in the adsorption of materials containing sulphur from the simulated petroleum media by using Nanoporous materials.
"Our purpose in this research was to absorb dibenzothiophene pollutant on Nanoporous materials through absorption processes," Mansour Anbiya, chemistry professor of Iran University of Science and Technology, said.

"To this end, SAB-15, Al-SBA-15, and CMK-3 Nanoporous compounds were synthesized and identified and they were used in the adsorption of dibenzothiophene from the simulated petroleum media," he added, saying, "Results showed significant improvement in the amount of adsorption and equilibrium time in comparison with the previous adsorbents. The adsorption of dibenzothiophene on CMK-3 was higher than Al-SBA-15, and the adsorption on Al-SAB-15 was higher than SBA-15."

In this research, dibenzothiophene dissolved in hexane was used as a model for the elimination of sulphurous compounds in fuels in order to study the performance of Nanoporous materials.

Explaining about the results of the research, Dr. Anbiya stated, "Due to its high specific surface area and its high porosity, CMK-3 carbon Nanoporous compound has a better performance in the adsorption process. The amount of adsorption is higher in Al-SBA-15 Nanoporous compound in comparison with the unmodified SBA-15 compound due to the presence of Bronsted-Lowry acid-base interactions."

In this research, the effects of various parameters such as the mass of the adsorbent, temperature, pH, and so forth have been investigated on the amount of adsorption, and kinetic models for adsorption have been suggested. The amount of adsorption on this adsorbent shows a relatively high improvement in comparison with the previous adsorbents.

The executor of the plan added in the end, "Taking into account the advantages of the application of adsorption process by using porous materials, such adsorbents can be used in adsorption towers in the form of porous beds or in the form of a nanofilter."
