Seoul shares open sharply higher on U.S. gains

SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks started sharply higher on Wednesday, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street, analysts said.
After opening 4.2 percent higher, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 2.94 percent, or 52.94 points, to 1,854.29 in the first 5 minutes of trading.
U.S. stocks rallied on Wednesday on the Federal Reserve Board's statement that pledged two more years of near-zero interest rates. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 3.98 percent and the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 5.29 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,076.45 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:05 a.m., up 11.65 won from Tuesday's close.
