China denies rumors of radiation leak on nuclear submarine

SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Yonhap) -- China notified South Korea that no radiation leaks have occurred from one of its nuclear submarines, officially squelching rumors that caused concerns here, an official at Seoul's foreign ministry said Wednesday.
The rumors started with a report on a U.S.-based Chinese-language Web site late last month and then quickly spread across the Internet through Sina Weibo, a Chinese microblogging site similar to Twitter, prompting media outlets in South Korea to call for China to come clean about the rumors.
An unidentified senior diplomat at the Chinese embassy in Seoul conveyed the denial officially in person to the South's foreign ministry on Tuesday, the official said on the condition of anonymity.
During the meeting with South Korean officials, the Chinese diplomat said, "No accident occurred involving the nuclear submarine," according to the official.
Last week, China's defense ministry officially denied the rumors, according to Global Times, an affiliate of the government-owned People's Daily.
