Over 1,600 teachers, civil servants to face trials over illegal donations
SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Yonhap) -- More than 1,600 school teachers and other public officials across the country will soon be put on trial for allegedly violating laws banning political activities by civil servants, the state prosecution said Wednesday.
A total of 1,352 teachers and 295 public officials were indicted without physical detention on charges of illegally paying monthly donations of up to 20,000 won (US$18.6) to the minor opposition Democratic Labor Party (DLP) as its members, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office said.
By law, public officials are banned from joining political parties and only official members can donate to their parties.
The 1,647 people indicted by prosecution offices across the country account for more than 80 percent of the 2,001 public workers investigated on allegations that they breached laws on public service, political parties and political funding.
Prosecutors released the remaining 354 people without charges in recognition of their repentance and pledges to leave the party shown during the investigation, according to the office.
"The cases were impartially handled with a set of guidelines and related investigations were all finalized," a prosecution official said.
The latest group indictment came after the prosecution accused 273 teachers and public workers in May last year for similar charges. They received court-ordered fines of up to 500,000 won per person before they appealed the decision to a higher court.
