4 metro stations to be built for FIFA World Cup in Yekaterinburg.
YEKATERINBURG, August 10 (Itar-Tass) - Four new stations of the metro
underground rail service will be built in Yekaterinburg for the 2018 FIFA
World Cup. One of them will be located in close proximity to the Central
Stadium, where the World Cup matches are scheduled. The press service of
the city administration told Itar-Tass on Wednesday that the construction
of the first station of the second metro line will be launched in the
beginning of 2012.
The municipality plans to build a total four stations of the metro
second West-East line. Three of them will be built cut-and-cover method,
because their depth will not exceed 20 metres. The fourth will be built by
tunnelling. The length of the first start-up complex of the second branch
of the metro will be 5 kilometres (double track). The cost of its laying
taking into account the construction of four stations will be about 30
billion roubles.
"The development of transport and logistics system must necessarily
ensure the implementation of such mega-projects as holding in
Yekaterinburg of matches of the FIFA World Cup in 2018, as well as the
World Expo in 2020 for the right to host which Russia is now struggling,"
Sverdlovsk governor Alexander Misharin believes.
"The presence in the region of millions of guests who will come to
attend these international events requires a radical revision of
approaches to the formation of transport-logistic schemes of Yekaterinburg
and the Sverdlovsk region," Misharin said, noting that special attention
should be paid to the modernisation of the urban transport system.
