Lee makes unscheduled visit to finance ministry
SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak made an unscheduled visit to the finance ministry Wednesday to discuss how to cope with the financial turmoil in the wake of the U.S. credit rating cut.
Lee was scheduled to preside over an emergency crisis management meeting with Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik and top finance and economy officials to discuss ways to stabilize the financial market, an official said.
The local financial market has taken a beating sparked by the first-ever U.S. credit rating downgrade and the persistent debt crisis in Europe. The main KOSPI index plunged more than 17 percent over the last six sessions as panic prompted retail investors to dump shares.
