Fabian Francis denies abuse against wife
SYDNEY (AAP) - Aug. 10 - Former AFL footballer Fabian Francis' wife bashed him with a golf club after suspecting him of having affairs, a court has heard.
Francis, 37, is on trial at the South Australian District Court for 20 alleged abuse-related crimes against his now ex-wife, former policewoman Debra Buckskin between 1998 and 2011.
On Wednesday, one of Ms Buckskin's former police colleagues, Rachel Thamm, told the court Ms Buckskin was obsessed with Francis, and suspected him of infidelity.
"I remember having conversations with her, her saying that she would get really angry and upset because she felt he was stepping out on her," Ms Thamm said.
Ms Thamm said she "nearly died" when Ms Buckskin told her she had "laid" into Francis with a golf club because he went to the movies with a woman.
Ms Thamm said Ms Buckskin told her "I beat the s*** out of that black c***" with the golf club.
On another occasion Ms Buckskin said she wanted to kill Francis who had been sleeping with other women.
Ms Buckskin's paranoia then turned to Ms Thamm and she accused her of having an affair with Francis.
Ms Buckskin, who was jailed for abusing public office in 2009, later apologised to Ms Thamm.
"She said she had been struggling with her mental state and just lashed out," Ms Thamm said.
Ms Thamm said Ms Buckskin had a reputation for being strong-headed.
"Basically she would get what she wanted, hell or high water," she said.
In a 2008 video played to the trial on Thursday, Francis told police that Ms Buckskin made up the abuse allegations because of the strain of corruption charges against her.
"Obviously she's making all these allegations up because she obviously is under a lot of strain through her interview (and) what's going on in her own personal life," he said.
Francis told police the couple's volatile relationship was "give and take" and they were both guilty of "being physical".
Prosecutor Mark Norman has told the trial Ms Buckskin endured years of abuse at the hands of her jealous, controlling and cruel husband who blackened his wife's eyes, bruised her body and broke her teeth.
The trial continues.
