Documentary about Turkish immigrants in Germany to be displayed

ANKARA (A.A) – August 10, 2011 - "Immigration Reality" (Goc Gercegi), a documentary on 50-year-old story of Turkish workers who immigrated to Germany, will be displayed for the first time on the sidelines of the 63rd Frankfurt Book Fair.
The documentary's project coordinator Ayse Sonmez told A.A on Wednesday that the documentary would tell about the effects of the immigration of Turkish workers on economic, political, cultural and social relations between Turkey and Germany as well as interviews with the immigrant Turks.
Sonmez noted that the immigration story would be 50 years old in October as Turkey and Germany had signed Recruitment Agreement on October 31, 1961.
She said that the documentary would be shot in Istanbul, Ankara and Bursa cities of Turkey and Frankfurt and Berlin cities of Germany.
It will be displayed for the first time during the 63rd Frankfurt Book Fair, she added.
The 63rd Frankfurt Book Fair will take place between October 12 and 16.
In 1961, a total of 7,116 Turks immigrated to Germany as guest workers. The recruitment treaty in 1961 made Germany the prime host country for Turkish guest workers and by 1973, some 80 percent of the Turks in Western Europe lived in Germany, and although this share had decreased to 70 percent by 1990, Germany remained by far the most important country of settlement for Turkish immigrants.
