Lee orders all-out recovery efforts for southwest hit by record rainfall
SEOUL, Aug. 11 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak ordered the government Thursday to make all-out efforts to help South Korea's southwestern regions recover from devastating rainfall, his spokesman said.
Up to 441 millimeters of rain fell in North Jeolla Province between Tuesday and Wednesday, with the city of Jeongeup receiving 420mm of rain on Wednesday alone, the largest single-day rainfall in the city since 1969.
At least two people were left dead or missing in the downpours that triggered landslides and devastated farmlands, roads and homes. Property damage is estimated at tens of billions of won (tens of millions of dollars), officials said.
On Thursday, Lee called North Jeolla Province Gov. Kim Wan-joo and asked the local government to "mobilize all of its administrative capabilities" to recover from the disaster as early as possible, presidential spokesman Park Jeong-ha said.
Lee said he is especially concerned about damage to farmers and pledged that the central government will provide as much help as possible, according to Park.
Lee was on his way to the southeastern city of Daegu to visit a factory, discuss ways to boost the local economy, and check on preparations to host the World Championships in Athletics set for Aug. 27-Sept. 4.
