Seoul shares up 1.02 pct in late-morning trade
SEOUL, Aug. 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks traded 1.02 percent higher late Thursday morning as an institutional buying spree helped pare early-morning losses, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) climbed 18.44 points to 1,824.68 as of 11:20 a.m.
After opening 4 percent lower, the KOSPI gathered ground on institutional and retail buying. Foreigners remained net sellers.
Shares gained across the board, but financials remained in negative territory. Market bellwether Samsung Electronics and top steelmaker POSCO also were among the biggest decliners.
The local currency was changing hands at 1,083.4 won to the greenback as of 11:20 a.m., down 3.4 won from Wednesday's close.
